Marissa Calderón and Carla Rivera-Cruz are education consultants and entrepreneurs living in the Phoenix-Metro area in Arizona. They have found joy and support in one another and want to spread the love across the country (or even the world) to empower their fellow Latinas to pursue their passions and reach their highest potential professionally.
According to the Unrealized Impact report, Latinos make up less than 10% of employees across the education industry, while students who identify as Latinos make up a quarter of the K-12 student body in the United States. In addition, the presence of Latinos in positions of leadership in the education sector is even lower. We recognize that gender can also be an added barrier to achieving higher status in organizations. We don’t think this is right. As Latinas, we want to uplift and empower our peers with resources and a supportive network.
It’s simple and it’s free. All you need is a Twitter account and to follow @LatinasInED. On the first Sunday of each month we will launch a series of questions, coupled with resources, based on our theme for the month. It's a #slowchat so all participants need to do is log in to Twitter, follow the #LatinasInED conversation, and join in on the conversation. Topics we have brainstormed include ways to find leadership/growth opportunities, promoting an inclusive curriculum, and highlighting your role models for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Check out the #LatinasInED hashtag on Twitter for posted articles and resources to support the K-12 Latina Educator.
You can also check out our #LatinasInED Google Doc for an ongoing document file of articles and other info we've collected for Educators HERE.
